Between 2009 and 2013, over half a million parents of US Citizen children were deported. Many of the deportees we meet in Tijuana were primary breadwinners for families residing in Southern California, and own property and businesses in the United States. Some are single parents whose US citizen children were taken into foster care when they were deported. Deportation often occurs suddenly, leaving families little time to plan for the enormous changes wrought by separation.
Al Otro Lado has assisted dozens of families with cross-border custody issues, and helps connects family members residing in the United States to social, legal, medical, housing, and mental health services via a unique program in Los Angeles.
Al Otro Lado is a partner organization at the The Wellness Center – Los Angeles, located in the historic LA County General Hospital building on the LAC+USC Hospital Campus. Housed where many of our clients and their families are receiving care, we offer free immigration legal services to low-income individuals. This partnership allows clients to access a multitude of services (legal, medical, mental health, exercise, health, and others) in one place.
If you or a family member has been deported and you need help, please contact Ricardo Diaz, Paralegal.
