Al Otro Lado is a bi-national advocacy and legal aid organization serving migrants, refugees and deportees in the United States and Mexico. We leverage vital partnerships and engage thousands of volunteers to increase our capacity and help build a broad-based immigrant justice movement. Our approach is multidisciplinary, client-centered, and trauma-informed, combining fierce legal advocacy with holistic support. The clients we serve include medically vulnerable and disabled migrants, people in detention, and all families who have been separated by unjust US immigration policies. Al Otro Lado conducts human rights monitoring in immigration prisons and at the border, informing our impact litigation and policy advocacy strategies with a focus on dismantling systems of oppression.

Al Otro Lado has an annual budget of 4 million with a broad national donor base that includes a significant number of both recurring and major donors who are deeply committed to the work of AOL and immigrants' rights. There are many opportunities for the right person to make a real difference.

The Development Manager will be a full-time, salaried position with full benefits operating out of Al Otro Lado’s San Diego office, Los Angeles office, or remotely, with occasional travel to different program sites. In addition to a generous benefits package, the salary range is $65,000 - $75,000.

The Development Manager is part of our work in growing organizational fundraising and relationship building. They will excel in ethically engaging with and serving donors, building lifelong relationships with donors and other stakeholders, and creating strong ties to the business and funding communities. They will take all of their experience and bring AOL fundraising and development systems to a level that will support our growing mission.

Donor Relations

1. Develop and implement annual fundraising plans and strategies.

2. Manage and maintain all database information.

3. Manage all organization expressions of donor gratitude.

4. Manage all correspondence and data with giving portals- including securing donor info, entering it into Network For Good and sending letters when appropriate.

5. Create newsletters to donors, funders and other stakeholders.

6. Create and support fundraising opportunities for donors and businesses.

7. Serve as Al Otro Lado liaison for events and fundraisers and coordinate speaking engagements. Support fundraising events

8. Coordinate messaging, talking points/ visuals for use in campaigns and donor acknowledgment with the Communications Director.

9. Write and distribute all Donor Outreach materials and Network For Good copy in coordination with the Leadership Team. This includes materials for Giving Tuesday, Year-end letters, and planned campaigns during the year.

10. Engage with directors on major donor support and campaign challenges/successes.

11. Support AOL in creating a fundraising culture among staff and board.

12. Hire and support development staff.

13. Serve as Al Otro Lado representative on any grantor coalition groups.

Grant Management

1. Keep a current log of all major grants tracking grant amounts and terms and reporting requirements.

2. Work with directors and program staff on all portions of grants from start to finish.

3. Enter and maintain all grant information in regard to timelines, applications, submitted budgets, award letters, correspondence, reports for each grant received, etc.

4. Maintain and grow relationships with funders and program managers.

5. In collaboration with Directors/program staff produce grant reports. Work with accounting staff to secure needed financial reports.

6. Complete final submission of grant reports via mail or donor portal.

7. Work with Directors and accounting staff to identify budget holes, funding priorities and strategies.

8. Monitor various websites/list serves to track upcoming grant opportunities.

9. Participate in provider/ donor network meetings to stay abreast of potential funding or collaborative opportunities,

10. Maintain grant application log, tracking all grants applied for amounts, program areas, deliverables proposed and funding status. Track any feedback received from the funder on app.

11. Maintain application files, including RFP, application submitted, budget materials and correspondence.

12. Communicate with all AOL staff involved in grant development the outcome of application.

13. In consultation with appropriate directors and program staff write grant narratives.

Required Qualifications:

Essentials:

● Strong commitment to working in social justice.

● Experience with leading all aspects of nonprofit fundraising.

● Experience and deep knowledge of all aspects of grant writing.

● Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment; successfully manage multi-functional projects, priorities and timelines with minimal supervision; follow-through and attention to detail.

● Experience working with immigrant communities.

● Excellent, natural abilities to begin and grow relationships.

● Strong interpersonal, writing and communications skills.

● Excellent time and project management skills.

Preferred:

● Fluency/proficiency in Spanish (listen, speak, read, write).

● Strong computer skills including the ability to work with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and Network for Good fundraising software; solid knowledge and comfort with word processing, spreadsheets, mail merge, and advanced functions.

● Experience with and aptitude for relational databases; strong database skills, including high-level data entry, tracking and analyzing data and data forensics.
